My last article discussed the invisible bond between our present selves and our future selves. In this TED talk, Daniel Goldstein outlines the phenomenon nicely and also shows some tools he’s developing to increase awareness of this subtle but important connection. I’m not sure if I feel the software he’s created is as accessible and impactful as it could be, but I’m thankful for the efforts he’s making towards addressing this issue. I think if I were to design software to show people how our present actions affect future outcomes, I would make a resource management game, where a successful retirement is the end goal. Do you guys have any ideas? I am now in the production phase of my third book, and with a new book coming out and a lot of other things to juggle, I won’t be able to work on articles for this blog for a while. It’ll be back though! I want to make a whole book of this type of content, so please stay connected through the facebook page, or twitter, or rss.

For a lot of people, making big goals can be intimidating, because you usually can’t accomplish big goals in a single day, or week or month. Sometimes it takes years to accomplish big goals! But we’re going to spend a lot of time talking about how to break big goals down into smaller, bite-size, manageable work-chunks, so in the meantime, ignore the “how am I going to do this?” and focus on the “what do I want to do?” Give yourself permission to dream big. What are your goals?

Hey friends, I’m glad you’re here! I’m interested in hearing your feedback. This is not a 10-steps-to-greatness-self-help blog. This blog will merely be about what I’ve learned so far. If you’ve got something good to share, or a better way to do things, please let me know in the comments!

Hello, my name is Stephen McCranie and I’m a cartoonist. I’m happy you’re here! I am currently working on a children’s comic book series for Philomel, a division of Penguin Young Readers Group. The series is called Mal and Chad, and you can learn more about it here. If you’d like to learn a bit more about me, you can read my journal comic here. Doodle Alley used to be my gallery website, but is now the home of this picture blog. I started this project to encourage a dialogue between artists and creative types like myself about what the ideal creator looks like. I feel like sometimes we are myopically focused on perfecting our craft, and forget to build a healthy lifestyle to sustain ourselves and our creativity. This blog explores not just process, but principles. I can only work on this project in my free time, so updates will be random and infrequent depending upon the season– please add this blog to your rss feeds or follow me on twitter or facebook to get reminders!
